Search Engine WHAT?!
By Zoey on Thursday, April 23rd, 2009 at 9:51 am
Many times that’s the response we get when first approaching businesses about their online marketing.
If not that, then it’s “yeah Google comes around to our office every month”.
– Yeah right.
So, Search Engine WHAT?!…Search Engine Optimisation, otherwise known as SEO, is the process of ranking a website on the first page of Google in the natural listings which are on the left hand side. SEO involves examining search algorithms and what internet users are searching for to increase the volume of traffic directed at a website. Optimising a website can be highly complicated and time consuming as it involves a site’s coding, presentation, structure and constant updating in order to get search engine spiders to index the site into popular search engines like Google.
Depending on how competitive targeted keyword phrases are SEO can be quite a drawn out process. However, once a website has a first page ranking the returns are significant. Unlike Adwords, SEO is seen as a more long term marketing strategy; increasing authority, branding, exposure, offline to online conversions and more importantly sales and return on investment.
For instance, take Dr. Mark Levi; he started off with 12 keywords with us and now ranks for 560 keywords on page one of Google. He’s been with us for a little over 24 months, but these results are pretty typical when it comes to search engine rankings, we’ll be doing a case study report on Dr Levi in the future for you to read through.
Not only does SEO multiply a websites keyword rankings, it also guarantees a higher click through rate compared to Ad words listings. When you yourself do a Google search, which results are you likely to click on? “The left side”, I hear you saying – no I’m not psychic. In fact our clients and studies have shown that natural listings pull up to 4-6 times more traffic via natural SEO rankings compared to that of Adwords… It goes even further when you look into the research conducted by places like Neilson Online who report that 54% of internet users making an offline buying decision, made that decision by researching online first.
Now and in the future, a natural search engine listing is going to be vital for a business’s success and survivability… the problem is, there are only 10 spots within Google that control the majority of the traffic, the question is whether you’ll be one of those 10.
